Austinites for Impeachment

Facts about impeachment

There are strong grounds for bringing impeachment proceedings against President Bush and Vice President Cheney. Here are a few of the reasons:

  • They twisted and cherry-picked intelligence to support going to war in Iraq, and deliberately distorted the truth to build their case.
  • They violated the Geneva conventions by approving of torture and "renditions" (see the case of Maher Arar), thus severely damaging the position of the US on human rights issues; and allowed the atrocities at Abu Ghraib to happen. The Geneva conventions have effectively been killed by the Bush administration, and American soldiers will now be more likely to face torture than before.
  • They broke the FISA law by conducting secret, domestic wiretaps without court authority.
  • Additionally (though perhaps not illegally), they plotted to blow the cover of a CIA employee, Valerie Plame Wilson, in retaliation against her husband, who published information that discredited their positions.

Our Constitutional system of checks and balances requires that Congress act without further delay. We need more clamor at the grass-roots level to convince our politicians to do what needs to be done. If we miss this chance to hold our leaders accountable, future leaders will figure they can commit similar crimes and get away with it. Can we afford NOT to impeach Bush and Cheney?

A July 6, 2007 poll found that 45% of all Americans favor impeachment proceedings against President Bush, and 54% favor proceedings against Vice President Cheney. This massive response is impressive considering that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has declared impeachment to be "off the table", and that the mass media barely mentions it.

Imagine how these numbers would climb if the mainstream media started covering the story.
