There's ample evidence that President Bush and Vice President Cheney used misrepresentations and lies to take our nation into war with Iraq. (Don't take my word for that. Do some research—here's a good place to start.) They were NOT innocent victims of faulty intelligence. Rather, they deliberately twisted the intelligence to serve a pre-ordained goal. As the Downing Street memo recorded (of a meeting in July 2002), "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."
Should they be impeached for this? The question is, how can they not be? After all, if taking a country to war on fraudulent grounds isn't worthy of impeachment, then what is? This is exactly the kind of abuse of power that the founding fathers were concerned about when they put impeachment in the Constitution. Not to use it under such circumstances is a horrendous abdication of the principle of checks and balances. The President and Vice President are not above the law; but if no one holds them to the law, they might as well be—we might as well start calling ourselves a serial monarchy instead of a democracy.
It has (or should have) nothing to do with politics. This is not about Democrats and Republicans. It's about whether anyone in this country is above the law. We cannot sit idly by while Congress sets a historic precedent for looking the other way when Presidents (and Vice Presidents) abuse their power.
The reputation of the USA has suffered tremendous damage thanks to the lawless behavior of this administration. The rest of the world is wondering if accountability means anything to Americans. Let's reassure them by holding impeachment hearings—the only Constitutional response to executive-branch lawlessness.
